About Myself

My name is Yvonne Foster and I am a registered counsellor with NZAC (New Zealand Association of Counsellors) since 1997.

I trained as a Primary and then a Secondary School teacher at Otago University and the Dunedin College of Education. I taught in Nelson and Wellington and Christchurch for ten years before shifting my focus towards counselling.

I completed a Masters of Education with a Certificate of Counselling in 1996 at the University of Canterbury and have been working as a Counsellor and Supervisor  in Christchurch for the last twenty years.

My specialist field has been in working with adolescents and also in the placement and supervision of counsellors in training from the Masters of Counselling programme at Canterbury University and the Diploma of Counselling course at Ara Polytechnic.

Currently, I am supervising trainees who are studying towards their Bachelor or Masters of Counselling Degrees from a range of Tertiary providers. I provide a safe, supportive and confidential environment which allows the trainee to explore areas of challenge and growth. I am available between sessions so that the trainee is able to seek advice in regards to best practice and ethical decisions.

Many of the students that I have supervised over the years are now actively working as counsellors either in schools or other agencies throughout New Zealand. I work predominantly from a Solution Focussed Model however since counselling is such a complex and dynamic activity I also draw from other modalities such as Narrative, Client/Person Centred and CBT.
